MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

What is an MRI?

An MRI is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed pictures of the inside of your body. It can be used to examine organs, soft tissues, bones, and even the brain.

Why get an MRI?

Doctors may recommend an MRI to:

  • Diagnose a variety of medical conditions, including:
    • Injuries to muscles, ligaments, and tendons
    • Tumors and cancers
    • Heart problems
    • Stroke
    • Multiple sclerosis
    • Abnormalities in the brain or spinal cord
  • Monitor treatment for certain conditions
  • Plan for surgery

How does an MRI work?

During an MRI scan, you lie inside a large tube-shaped machine that generates a strong magnetic field. Radio waves are then pulsed through your body, causing atoms to align in a specific way. The machine detects the signals emitted by these atoms and uses them to create detailed images.

Advantages of MRI:

  • Non-invasive: No needles or radiation involved.
  • Detailed images: Provides superior visualization of soft tissues compared to X-rays or CT scans.
  • Safe for most people: Generally safe for healthy individuals.
  • Versatile: Can be used to examine a wide range of body parts and conditions.

Disadvantages of MRI:

  • Claustrophobic: The enclosed space of the machine can cause anxiety for some people.
  • Costly: MRIs are typically more expensive than X-rays or CT scans.
  • Not suitable for everyone: People with certain medical implants or claustrophobia may not be suitable candidates.
  • Time-consuming: An MRI scan can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour or more.
